Snowball Rally 2009!

Snowball Rally Day Three – The Final Day

Saturday 21st November 2009Ok day three, the final day. We new from the start that we were going to be racing the clock today. We had to be back at Sno! zone in Milton Keynes by 7pm, the deadline or we would be disqualified. We left our cozy beds in the hotel, and put on our very smelly and slightly damp gear. Two hard days of riding dryslopes had really taken a toll on the gear, not to mention our car. It was beginning to smell very strange and the rubbish in the footwells was starting to threaten to overwhelm us. Dad started a rumour that their was a killer sock circling the car, ready to strike at anyone who did not smell the same as the car.

The Snowball Rally  – Day Two

Friday 20th November 2009Ok, this morning started early in Bracknell, after a night with all of our boots helmets and snowboarding gear stored in it, we all noticed that the car was not smelling as fresh as when we started, all except Chris who said ‘he thought his cold was a blessing’. The first place we had to go to was Mcdonalds for breakfast. Last night we had changed our route plan slightly due to making up more time than expected. After a quick discussion we decided to head to Guildford, there is a very small slope that is attached to the college. Unfortunately when we arrived there, all the lights were on, but nobody was home. We waited for about 20 minutes, tried to phone, but could only leave a message on the answerphone. We decided that enough time had been wasted and we headed back into the ‘very ripe’ car and off to the southcoast. Dad said ‘typical students, probably still in bed’.While on the way to Southhampton, we were called by the guy from ‘Christ College’ slope at Guildford to apologise for not being there. He said ‘Sorry I was not there I was still in bed’. No he really said ‘that as we waited there for him we could tick it off our list’.We arrived at Southampton after driving through some awful wet weather. Luckily the rain had stopped, as we had to walk about a half a mile through a park dressed in all our snowboarding gear carrying our boards. We walked past the tennis courts, past the ice cream shop, past the swings and slide, around the boating lake, past the athletic track and finally we found the slope!! Guess what after two runs, we had to walk all the way back again!!!

There it is!!!

So off to Cristchurch and closely followed by Warmwell in Dorset next. This was followed by the long haul to Exeter in Devon.

Jake took his first big tumble at Exeter and litrally earned his dryslope stripes. After a quick  check of his scratches on his side, we declared him medically fit to carry on.

Jakes Stripes!!

The day was starting to take its toll on me and Jake, at some point we both fell asleep. I think Dad tried to catch us snoring on video!!!

Plymouth slope was an incredible site at night all lit up and dominating the hill on the main road in. The view from the top was spectacular overlooking the lights of Plymouth. It is always more exciting riding at night.

After Plymouth we headed off to Avon at Bristol. We ended up calling this the ‘Scooby Doo slope’. It was a slope buried in a very wooded hill. The poma lift to the top of the slope took you off on a seperate track through the woods, and the dim lighting kept flickering on and off. This all led to a very creepy but fun feel. I raced off leaving Dad and Jake alone at the top off the slope, as Dad was about to set off he heard Jake calling ‘WAIT FOR ME, DON’T LEAVE ME’! Dad said he had never seen someone do their bindings up so quick and duck walk so fast to get started. Jake said ‘of course I am not scared, just want to get down first’.

It was so much fun being scared we had to have several goes!!!!

Our final slope of the night was at Glouscester, we arrived very close to their closing time and we were not certain they would let us on. However once they agreed we hit the slope, to find a local crew of young snowboarders and skiiers freestyling a jump and a box. They were very curoios as to why and what we were doing. We explained about Snow-camp and the Snowball rally and they were really interested and excited about the whole thing. They were soon checking out mine and Jake’s skills on the kicker (jump) and the box. After we busted out a few of our best moves, they were amazed at our level as we had only really just started riding dryslopes. They decided to stay open longer and we all had a really cool freestyle session. Dad filmed loads of the locals showing us their moves. It was a fantastic vibe and a very cool way to end the day.

Chris and Dad then made the decision to drive up North until late, so we could start the day up at Runcorn in Cheshire. Both Jake and I fell fast asleep and  were woken up for us to check in to a hotel at the services on the M6. Fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow.

Wet day to start today Christchurch College Lied

Where is the slope??

No! Seriously where is the slope???

Falling Down!!

Sleepy Heads!!

Jake on the box!

Snowball Rally 2009 Friday 19th November

Snowball Rally 2009

Thursday 19th NovemberOk we have finally settled on a name for our team- ‘Are We There Yet!’ Dad finished making the tee-shirts last night. My friend Jake Binnee aged 9 and his Dad Chris are also joining our team. We met up with them early this morning outside Snozone in Milton Keynes, where we needed to register for the rally and recieve our entrance package. The package consisted of stickers for the car, lanards with our names and charity registaration number on them. The most important thing was a piece of paper that had the names of all the slopes and had to be signed by every slope we visited. The time of our registration was very important as this would be the order that we could set off, first come first off etc.

Because of very strong winds this morning it was decided that the start would be inside Snozone, and would consist of a run down the slope and through a huge blow up arch, with the Snowball rally written on it.Team ‘Are We There Yet’ had managed to secure a 3rd place start. We all got to have a little play on the slope before the start, and Jake and I had a lot of fun hitting some rails that were out. Dad was riding and filming us and Chris who was not feeling well, he had a bad cold, was getting used to having his board under his feet. Then we got ready for the actual start, Dan Charlish the founder of Snow-camp the charity gave a speech. There was a lot of excitement with some people in fancy dress. The horn was blown to indicate the start of the rally, and we headed up the poma lift in the order of registration.

We were off! racing down the slope, Dad decided to spin all the way down and was so dizzy at the bottom he nearly fell over. We then raced out to our cars parked in the special section in the car park.

Our first stop was the nearest slope, this was Welyn Garden City about a 20 minute car drive. Mum had spent the last three days trying to plan the route we needed to take and the order of the slopes. This was a tough job as a lot of the slopes were open for only a certain time and some were closed on some of the days.

We reached the slope, and as we were getting ready another team arrived team- Jackrabbitt this prooved to be great fun as we then raced and fought with them to be first. We beat them down the slope, but they then grabbed Jake and me and started to try and hide us in the boot of their car. Dad and Chris grabbed their snowboards, so they had to let us go. We then found out that they were going to the same slope as us next. So the race was on!!

Hemel Hempstead was our next slope and the last real snow we would see till Friday. We managed to beat team jackrabbitt there and were the first down the slope. We had a lot of fun fighting them and they were a great laugh!

After that we were on our own for nearly the rest of the day. We headed east towards Brentwood and then to Folkstone. it was hard work getting used to riding all the different types of dryslope sufaces and we all had a couple of minor spills. Dad caught a lot on video, so keep checking the video section for the film.

By the time we reached Folkstone it was dark and we had our first night ride. Very small slope behind a swimming pool. We had to walk through the swimming pool section to get to it and all the people looked at us like we were mad, dressed in snowboarding gear.

We then surprised team jackrabbit  at Knockhatch they were having some food in the car, and we jumped on them and scared them silly. hated Knockhatch as the slope was made out of old carpet or something.

Then we headed back up towards Aldershot and finally Bracknel which was the last slope of the night. We then found a hotel and wearily went to bed.
